New System - Terminal Services Web Apps – Remote access to PASS
For some time we have had a system to enable remote access into some individual computers on the greshams domain and to control them remotely. This has given access to all normal programs, including PASS. However, the number of computers for general access has been limited.
Terminal Services Web Apps is a system which has the ability to run up to, effectively, 50 virtual computers on a single server allowing 50 concurrent users. If necessary, we could increase this to 100 concurrent users.  A major advantage is that it allows access to all local drives on the computer you are using, USB ports, any printers AND your personal area on our network.
The personal area that you see is the one that your profile on the greshams domain is pointing at. In general, Senior school staff see the server on the greshams domain., Prep staff see the Prep Server and Pre-Prep staff the Pre-Prep server. (Most OWA only users (ie most support staff) do not have any personal user area, but can still use TS apps). At the moment we have PASS and Office 2007 set up as applications.
The address is https://www.greshams.org/ts
This is a secure website, so remember the s after http
There is a link in ‘Remote login’ on the Staff Portals
Note that your computer must be running either Windows7, Vista with service pack 1, or XP with service pack 3. All staff laptops running Windows 7 can be used, but ones using XP may need service pack 3 installing.

  • When the login box appears put in your greshams domain username and password. This is the one you use for emails with Exchange.

Since the computer you are using will be outside our network, you will need to include the greshams domain name before your user name, unless you are using a staff laptop which is set to be ‘on’ the greshams domain. ie greshams\username.

This will display the main TS Web Access window showing the various applications available.

The applications loaded and running are shown in the folder icon on the bottom toolbar. The time taken to load the first one can be between 20 and 30 seconds, depending on your broadband speed, but subsequent ones load in a few seconds, provided the first has not been closed with the x button, but minimised with the button (top right hand corner of a window)

  • To load and run an application  left click on the icon to open the log on window for the application.   A ‘mini window’ will appear and then disappear after a few seconds, and then the logon box will appear.

Type in your greshams password
If PASS was selected then the screen will look soething like this

Type in your PASS username and password and PASS will work as normal. Remember that any Excel spreadsheets you create can be saved on your computer and any printers you have connected can also be used.

  • If you want to use another application, minimise PASS and left click on the application wanted. It will load without needing to put in any further passwords. If you have closed the previous application completely with the x, then your password will need to be entered again and it will take 20-30 sec to load instead of a few seconds.

Remember you will see the drives on your local computer as well as your network user area when you want to save or open a file/document

  • To see all the applications that are ‘live and running’, move the mouse over the ‘web apps’ folder on the bottom toolbar and the list will pop up in a window.

  • To log off and close Terminal Services Apps, first close the applications by right clicking the mouse over the Terminal Services folder/icon on the bottom toolbar and then left click on ‘close all windows’

Then, just close the web page using the x in the top right hand corner in the normal way. This will disconnect automatically.
